The contentious music clip, deemed “a bloody battle between the sacred and the profane,” was banned from YouTube for “violating terms of service” just a few hours after its release on Wednesday, and returned with an age restriction a little while later.

But some say Bowie’s creative vision mocks Christianity, and wish it was gone altogether.

“The video is offensive and distasteful. It is a misrepresentation of the multitudes of clergy who have given their lives to help hurting people. Undeniably, some clergy have misused their position, but to focus on these few is a character assault of their position and call,” Jay Lowder of Harvest Ministries told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “Bowie’s verse claiming ‘they work with Satan while they dress like saints,’ is to attribute God’s work through man as being sinister and evil in its origin. I find it hard to excavate any level of truth or reality from this video except Jesus was continually in the midst of those who were blind and sinful.”

And according to emerging songstress Erica Chase, music and art is the one place where boundaries can be pushed and rules can be broken.

“Artists have the ability to say what lay people and politicians often cannot because there is a demand for it,” she continued. “And religion encircles the great unknown: what is the purpose of this life and what happens after. Bowie and Gaga are just as uncertain as you and I about all that, so why can’t we enjoy a catchy song with an imaginative video to boot?”

A rep for Bowie did not respond to a request for further comment.

If you took John Lennon, Lindsey Buckingham, and Sheryl Crow and morphed them into one, it might sound a bit like Los Angeles native Erica Chase. She’s a little bit of old school rock and roll meshed with pop hooks, and wholeheartedly authentically unique.

On original tracks like “We Can Fly,” and “Never Let You Go,” there is a raw grittiness that comes echoing off of the speakers that sounds like a seasoned vet. From bass lines that shamelessly honor Paul McCartney and John Paul Jones, to lyrics spanning from political change to undying hope for love, Chase bleeds honesty in her music and leaves it all out on the stage and on the record.

And her music is beginning to get some buzz around the country.Erica formed a rock band in college which got local buzz, but it was not until her senior year that a partnership would begin that would make her next move extremely clear.

The day after a phone call introduction that would lead to an interesting partnership with Dana Strum (Vinnie Vincent, Slaughter & Vince Neil Band), Erica nearly lost her life as she was riding a bicycle and was hit by a truck, which landed her in the emergency room.

Though she fortunately walked away with minor injuries, this would make Erica absolutely certain that her next move to go full throttle with her music.

She spent the next two years working on demos in Las Vegas.

Erica is at the start of her epic journey, however, she is undoubtedly unique in her style, drive, and unwillingness to give up until her dreams come true.

I had a chance to speak with Erica about her music and life changing accident.

******

Rob: Tell me about your accident and how it affected your decision to be a full time musician?

Erica Chase: It was a day I will never forget. In 2006, one day after meeting my future mentor and manager, Dana Strum, on the phone, I was hit by a truck while riding my bicycle.

It shook my world up and I strongly believe that it was meant to be. At the time, I was so unsure of myself and scared to make the decision to pursue music full time after college.

I think it grounded and startled me at the same time. Ultimately, it made me realize that it was essential to follow a passion.

Rob : Dana is also producing your new CD, tell me how you came to work with him?

Erica Chase: We got introduced through a mutual ex-relation of his and my father. This relation told my dad that he had a friend in the music biz and agreed to set up a phone call first and then a meeting.

In Dana’s mind, he was doing this guy a favor by taking time to listen to my music. I was so unsure of myself in many ways in this initial meeting, but thankfully Dana saw something in me and was interested in taking me under his wing despite any guarantees. I’m grateful he believed.

Rob: Who are some of your formative influences?

Erica Chase: The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, Jeff Buckley, and Sheryl Crow would be my main songwriting influences and career idols. They are my deserted island luggage!

Rob: Tell me about when you first started performing in college?

Erica Chase: I did not start performing until I was a freshman in college and started a band with a few of my guy friends. I initially envisioned having a male sing the songs I wrote, but we never found one, so I became the front person by default. Everything happens for a reason.

Rob: What do you consider to be your “big break”?

Erica Chase: That would be gaining confidence and belief in myself leading me on this dream path.

Rob: Tell me about the new CD and what we can expect from it?

Erica Chase: I have been writing this record since 2006! I have over 200 songs written and over 75 recorded in some form or another. We are still narrowing down the list to determine what will be the final selection.

There are some great Sheryl Crow type riffs, and some great pop/rock hooks. It is organic and honest.

Rob: What do you think has been your biggest challenge, both musically and professionally, so far in your career?

Erica Chase: I think every artist can be their own worst enemy at times, so I would say my biggest challenge would be self doubt and not being as patient. Ultimately, I try and let these weaknesses drive me and push me forward. This is a new music industry and a different time to be a new artist, but it is also really exciting and I am up for the challenge!

Rob: With all these experiences you have gone through in your career, if a young musician was to come to you for advice about working in this industry, what would you tell him or her?

Erica Chase: If passion wakes you up each day and is on your mind until you sleep, then follow it. Follow it no matter who does or doesn’t understand and let it take you on an incredible frustrating and often gut wrenching ride, where you will discover yourself and experience the highest of highs.

The music industry is only as tough as you make it and I choose to push through and play through the pain, because the reward is worth it: personal freedom.

Rob: As a new artist how important is it to have contact with the fans, for example on Twitter, Facebook and other online Medias?

Erica Chase: It is essential these days to connect through social media. It also makes it so easy to interact directly with fans and blurs the line of artist and fans.

I love it and think it is a great way to get your art out to the public and to have something spread from person to person is a cool thing to watch.

Rob: Will you be going out on tour in support of the new CD?

Erica Chase: Yes and I cannot wait to share this record and these songs so close to my heart with everyone. Performing is a feeling unlike any other and it is why I wanted in this business.

My website will have all of the dates on there and I will tweet up a storm as well!

Erica Chase is a Southern California-born singer-songwriter and guitarist who grew up around two brothers and was very much into sports when she heard a Red Hot Chili Peppers tune at the age of 7. She was so hooked on it that she developed an interest in music. By the time she finished high school, she would be as much into the music as she was into sports, writing song after song, and learning how to play guitar.

While majoring in English at a private California college, her father’s business connections led to Erica meeting up with producer and Slaughter bassist Dana Strum in February 2006. No sooner did that meeting happen than the day after, Erica, while riding on her bicycle, crashed into a truck’s windshield, sustaining minor injuries. Her recovery led her to realizing that, despite future plans to be a school teacher, life was too short, and she wanted to rock.

I interviewed Erica recently and asked for her opinions about how the music industry has changed over the last quarter-century, as well as her work with Dana Strum and how I found out that there’s more to him than his days with Slaughter and Vince Neil.

Steve: As the movie musical Rock of Ages has dramatized, the 1980′s were all about the excess, but in the three decades since, the recording industry has evolved to a point where those excesses are practically nonexistent. Do you think the Internet’s proliferation is to blame?

Erica: I think excess of any kind is not built to last. Excess food leads to weight gain, alcohol leads to a drinking issue, and excess record label advances that do not get repaid lead to corruption and labels seeking any and every way to recoup their money for profit. The internet and the “free” accessibility of music to the public should and could have been embraced by the major labels and the music industry would probably be in better shape these days, but who knows!

Steve: When people these days expect to get their music for nothing, would money from sponsorships, licensing, merchandise sales and touring make up for that?

Erica: There are still very real ways to profit in the music industry and not just from live touring and merchandise sales. Taylor Swift, for example, has still sold over 20 million records worldwide in a declining music industry. I think it depends on the whole package. If you got the goods (the songs), a palatable image, and a positive lifestyle for others to emulate, you can still make money (a lot of it) from music royalties alone.

However, as a new artist these days, it is important to be open to other financial opportunities because of the often unpredictable and unstable nature of the business. Lastly, a thing that a lot of people do not know is how expensive touring can actually be. The cost of buses, trucks, equipment, staging, lighting, travel, crew, and band members adds up very quickly and by the time all of the money is divided, you might be unpleasantly surprised with what is left for you if you do not budget correctly.

Steve: Given that you’ve developed a musical style that’s been described as “Sheryl Crow + Beatles”, how did that play into working with a producer in Dana Strum, who’s been associated with heavy metal from his days with Slaughter and Vince Neil?

Erica: Dana’s reputation for being a heavy metal/hard rock bassist and producer, is a bit incorrect. A lot of people do not know that he has produced albums for the Gipsy Kings and started his career playing with Barry Manilow. He is a huge Beatles fan like myself, which makes working in the studio with him so much fun. We would create John/Paul harmonies and just goof off listening to some classic music. In fact, there is a Slaughter song called “Days Gone By,” which is very Beatles-esque and a song I always chat with him about covering one day because it’s such a cool ballad.

Steve: Dance music has been dominating the charts lately, and what’s left of the major-label recording industry these days is looking out for the hits. How does that affect an artist of your style, Erica, and what do you think the solution is?

Erica: There have always been trends and there have always been multiple kinds of music in the mainstream at the same time. Back in the 70′s there was a time where dance and disco were hugely popular, but yet we seem to remember a little band called Led Zeppelin and maybe another called Fleetwood Mac that managed to sell millions of records during the same time. That is the beauty of art and music; there is something for everyone. I am not looking to be a passing trend; I love writing music and hope to be involved in the industry as long as they will have me!

Steve: The major labels aren’t funding artists like they used to, yet some of the big-name acts have resorted to financing themselves. Even some smaller acts have gone the “crowdfunding / fanfunding” route, such as with Kickstarter, to fund their albums or tours. Erica, how did you manage to attract investors for your upcoming album?

Erica: My grandfather was a self-made entrepreneur as is my father so that was kind of instilled in me from an early age. I know I am coming up in a way different music industry and a poor economic time as well, so I am fighting an uphill battle. However, teamed up with a great partner with an exceptional business background and has worked for many start ups as well, and we carefully, along with my manager, Dana Strum, packaged together a cohesive marketing plan and investment proposal to solicit.

However, the thing that is important to note, is that everyone on my team believes so strongly in what I do and the potential of the product to have a wide reach and that is why through all of the frustrations, we are very positive and will not stop until we do what we set out to do. The fact that others believe in me and are putting up their hard earned money behind it can be a little nerve wracking but also motivates me to achieve. I am so grateful to all of those that have invested their time, money, or both into my music and me.

Steve: Even with the advent of “360 deals” in which a major label can get up to half of what the artist takes in from all revenue sources, including tours, endorsements and merchandise sales, do you think there is still some advantage to being on a major label?

Erica: With shows like American Idol and The Voice, where the grand prize is being signed to a major label, labels still have clout. I think there is some value to labels, I would say more on the distribution side especially internationally. However, it is not the be-all, end-all. Anyone with a computer can produce a record and put it out online for free. However, if you are going to go without a label, it is important to raise money for marketing so that your music can have the same chance as a Justin Bieber or Rihanna of getting heard and embraced. It is essential for any new artist to also be a businessperson and be in control of their finances and hands-on in their career. That would be my biggest advice and without a doubt, the most valued lesson I have learned from working with Dana over the years.

Erica Chase’s debut album is due to be released soon, but you can hear three of her songs on her website,www.ericachase.com . You can also find her official fan page on Facebook, , follow her on Twitter, as well as watch some videos, including one for “We Can Fly”, on her YouTube page.

Erica Chase is a rock star and a pop star. Though influenced at a young age by The Beatles, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, she says she has “always dreamed about a Top 40 kind of singer-songwriter career.” Chase seamlessly blends both genres into something she can truly call her own unique style. Armed with her guitar and a deep, powerful voice, Chase is on the rise to the top. Her dream of landing the Top 40 charts just might become reality sooner rather than later.

Dana Strum, bassist for Slaughter, is producing Chase’s upcoming debut album, which is set to release some time this year. Check out the music video for her original song “We Can Fly.”

Chase-ing Your Dreams, One Chord at a Time

Singer/Songwriter Erica Chase decided life’s too short not to be a rock star.

Published by Christine Louise Hohlbaum in The Power of Slow

Erica Chase, the talented young singer/songwriter (“We Can Fly”) was an English major at Pitzer College in Claremont, California, when she met multiplatinum producer, Dana Strum (Slaughter bassist). Through connections her father’s business partner made in Las Vegas, Erica met Dana on February 1, 2006. That date will forever burn in her memory, not only because of the amazingness of the moment, but because of what happened the very next day. Riding on her bicycle on the way to meet a friend for lunch, she was slammed up against a truck windshield, flying through the air and onto the ground. She awoke in a helicopter with a mask over her face.

“I will never forget that day for as long as I live,” she told me in a recent phone interview. While she had dabbled in songwriting as a high school jock growing up sandwiched between two brothers, she hadn’t realized how much her dream to become a rock star outweighed her upper-middle class upbringing of doing the smart thing such as becoming an educator. “I was on my way to Seattle to become a teacher,” she revealed. But after her accident, from which she miraculously walked away with minor injuries, she realized how short life could be. It was time to take the bull by the horns and live out the secret dream she truly harbored.

What fascinated me most about our conversation was the feeling she had when she met Dana Strum. “I knew something big was about to happen,” Erica said. She didn’t know what that was, but she knew she was on the edge of something indescribable. It was a heavy energy that can be equated to the onset of depression, a significant weightiness that one simply cannot ignore. The very next day, as she was flown to the hospital, she knew she couldn’t live without music. “It was my wake-up call.”

The life of a rock star is an irregular one, not necessarily what one thinks of when one thinks of slow living. But late nights and loads of travel don’t phase this twenty-something artist. One of her big dreams now is to do a multiple city tour via bus.

When I asked whether she was worried she might burn out, she revealed an inner truth that I share. Like myself, who simply cannot live without writing, she cannot live without music. It is so deeply entrenched in her soul that to live any other way would mean certain death. In true power of slow style, she is living her life on purpose. It took a severe knock-down to put her on the right track, but luckily she chose to listen to the message right away. As a result, we get to profit from her stellar Sheryl Crowe-meets-Beatles sound. And that’s a track we’d all like to hear!
